Nobody owns this problem: The platform engineer's cross-functional mandate

A test feed failed 40% of the time for six weeks. Development blamed QE. QE blamed platform. Platform blamed data. Data blamed QE again. Four teams, zero progress, because the failure did not live inside anyone’s boundary.

Matt Long, UK Head of Engineering at ClearRoute, argues that platform engineering exists to own exactly this kind of problem. Quality engineering was the first function forced to reason across the whole system rather than just the code. Platform engineering does the same job at greater scale.

Long applies that lens to three problems every platform team faces today: release confidence, developer feedback loops, and AI evaluation pipelines. In each case, split ownership produces ping-pong, not progress. Fixing it takes a different question than most teams ask—and a different kind of hire than most job specs describe.

Watch Matt’s full talk from PlatformCon 26 to see how he defines the mandate, and what he thinks it means for who you should be hiring next.
