Clearroute gets on board with Maclean brothers for Pacific charity row

Tech pioneers ClearRoute has announced it is partnering with the Maclean brothers to support them as they attempt a record-breaking challenge to row across the Pacific Ocean.

ClearRoute, headquartered in London, are experts in platform engineering, quality engineering and developer experience and are sponsoring the Scottish family as they embark on their charitable Rare Whisky 101 Pacific Row, from Lima in Peru to Sydney, Australia.

The 14,000km journey began on April 12 and is expected to take around four months, during which they hope to break the record for the fastest human-powered crossing of the full Pacific Ocean.

The world record attempt aims to raise more than £1M for clean water projects in developing countries like Madagascar through their charity, The Maclean Foundation. The brothers, whose father Charles Maclean MBE is the world’s leading whisky writer, broke three world records rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in January 2020.

The partnership illustrates ClearRoute’s drive to make waves, think big and not be afraid to break new ground.

The company’s CEO Charlie Whaley said:

“As a team, we’re genuinely excited by the things people can achieve when they push past expectations and norms – the breakthroughs that happen on the other side of physical and mental endurance. So we cannot wait to see the brothers on the other side and hear about their journey.

“We’re also excited about the impact that feats like this make. If the brothers hit their £1M target, that will provide a lifetime’s clean water for at least 30,000 people. That’s 30,000 lives changed forever, because three brothers dreamt big, didn’t let doubts win and dared to do something different.
“We’ve always been proud to stand for breaking new ground, thinking big and making waves. With a planned row of 9,000 miles non-stop and unsupported across the full Pacific Ocean to raise money for clean water projects around the world, the Maclean Brothers are certainly doing that. We’re honoured to support them. The association is an exciting and dynamic one.”

And James Jarvis, Chief Revenue Officer at ClearRoute, added:

“The global team at ClearRoute is absolutely behind the Maclean brothers as they take on the immense challenge of rowing across the Pacific, unsupported—continuing their mission to raise £1M for clean water initiatives.
“Beyond sponsorship, we are building a cloud platform on GCP (Google Cloud Platform) to power their video, device data, and content, ensuring their journey is captured and shared in real time. But our commitment goes much deeper. The entire team is rallying behind the Maclean Clean Water Foundation to help create a long-term, sustainable clean water solution – starting with Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest nations.
“Together, we believe in harnessing technology where possible, determination, and collective action to make a lasting impact. We’re absolutely resolute about helping to build a sustainable, long-term clear route to clean water that we benefit thousands of people and communities now and long into the future.”

Oldest Maclean brother Ewan is a 33-year-old product design engineer who works for Dyson, while middle brother Jamie builds saunas for a living. Youngest brother Lachlan, 26, said before the launch:

“Trying to raise £1m for clean water projects and securing sponsorship is as big a challenge — if not bigger — than the row itself.
“We’re also strategising ahead of the row, looking at tactics in terms of pacing and boat load, and mentally preparing too. This will be like nothing we’ve ever done before.”

Last month, the brothers flew to South America to acclimatise ahead of the daunting journey.

During their feat in January 2020, the trio became the first three brothers to row any ocean, and the youngest and fastest trio to row across the Atlantic, doing so in just 35 days and raising more than £200,000 for charity in the process.
